BBQ's Then & Now

National BBQ Week – a potted history

We’ve come a long way from those dim, distant days of summer 1997 when National BBQ Week was first launched and the cry was “if it ain’t burnt, it ain’t barbi” where a burnt sausage was placed in a limp bun and doused in ketchup! In fact, National BBQ Week has not only helped change all of our BBQ and summer eating attitudes towards a gastro-grilling style, it’s also helped grow the BBQ market from just 9 million BBQ occasions back then to around 155 million Barbi’s in 2022. Despite a dip last year due to a really wet summer, we look set to be back to around the 150-60 million BBQ occasions in 2024!
